Dutch Supreme Court rules in favour of dromedary keepers — a decisive step for the sector
A major step forward for the camelid sector: the Dutch Supreme Court has ruled that the dromedary assessment must be reconsidered. The ruling highlights the importance of recognising centuries of human-animal interaction, practical knowledge and responsible keeping.

Dromedaries welcome back in the Netherlands?
Since July 1, 2024, keeping dromedaries in the Netherlands has been prohibited. Only the 30 mammal species listed on the official domestic and hobby animal list may legally be kept. Other species, including the dromedary, are considered by the government to pose too great a risk to human and animal welfare.
There is one exception: Camel Dairy Farm Smits, the largest in Europe, has been granted an exemption and may continue to keep its animals

News: Dutch dromedaries: Ban Under Scrutiny
Since July 1, 2024, the keeping of dromedaries has been prohibited in the Netherlands (except for the Dutch Camel Dairy, www.kamelenmelk.nl ). There is also the fear that other European countries will follow this Dutch example. Because the scientific basis for this ban is very weak the Dutch supreme court is asked to lift the exile of the dromedaries.
